The papers in the ARCHES Aquarelle range are manufactured in a round shape: a quality that approximates that of artisan paper. The slow rotation of the cylinder allows the fibers to be deposited evenly and spread in all directions of the fabric. The fibers are evenly distributed, the paper relaxes evenly, when wet, offering greater control for the artist. Only the manufacture in a round shape allows to obtain papers with beards. This process enables the production of heavyweight papers with exceptional resistance to scratching and erasing.
100% cotton and with a wide assortment of weights, ARCHES Aquarelle papers come in 3 grains:
• FINE GRAIN: natural and harmonious, suitable for most painted techniques or subjects. It remits the light and enhances the transparency of the pigments.
• SATIN GRAIN - The paper has an additional finish, a pass under the press to obtain a very smooth paper. Its grain is imperceptible and absorbs colors very quickly. It is adapted for work on details and making fine brush strokes.
• COARSE GRAIN: the one with the greatest relief. This texture makes it possible to highlight the color and volumes. The choice of texture depends on the medium used by the artist. But in general, texture for the artist is a personal choice that is part of his creative process and artistic expression.
ARCHES is the only paper mill in the world that gelatinizes the mass of its watercolor paper. Sizing in the mass with natural gelatin preserves the state and transparency of colors by preventing pigments from transferring to the thickness of the paper. It allows overlays of washes and reinforces the resistance to erasing and scratching, without breaking, or creating lint. It also allows to remove pigments, working both wet and dry, and easily recover the whiteness of the paper. ARCHES Aquarelle can absorb a lot of water, its deformation is limited. Even if it is wet for a long time, the paper retains a sufficient amount of gelatin and does not become too absorbent.
